With the previous unfortunate loss against NYJC still etched deeply in our minds, we set out with the resolve that we would go all out and not let that memory cripple our game against Dunman High School (DHS) in our second Nationals Inter-Schools Basketball Championships.

After the tip-off, quick passes were made and we managed to get off to a good start with Bernice nailing a 2pt field goal within seconds into the game. Things were going smoothly as we put in several open baskets, but loopholes in our defence allowed DHS to score 2 consecutive 3-pointers. The first quarter ended with DHS trailing us at 10-9.

In the second quarter, DHS scored the first basket, giving them the advantage. However, DHS got into some foul trouble, giving us many opportunities at the free throw line to take back the lead at 14-11. Although it took quite a while, we eventually warmed up to the game tempo and converted several baskets, earning our next 6 points from inside the paint. The quarter concluded with a score line of 20-11.

The third quarter was a roller coaster ride. A steal from Carisia earned us an opportunity for a fast break, which Wei Jing then converted successfully. Our second play had us attempting a few shots from outside the three-point arc before making a pass into our post, Charmaine, who did a clean spin move over two defenders to nail an under basket, leading to screams of approval from the boys who were supporting in the stands. This led us on to a scoring streak, made possible with aggressive defence, quick passes, and timely assists. Finding our own pace in the game, we completely shut down the opponent’s offence, leaving them no opportunity to score a single basket. By the end of the quarter, we were in a comfortable lead of 44-11.

Knowing that the score gap was rather substantial, we seemed to slacken on our defence and proceeded with the game with less caution. This was rather costly as it allowed DHS to score multiple fast breaks and open baskets, causing us to lose the last quarter 15-8.

Nonetheless, the match ended with a convincing score of 52-26 which signalled our win over DHS. Next match review to come: vs ACJC
