The game started off with our team getting off to a blazing start as we managed to force turnovers and make very quick outlet passes to the players running on the fastbreak for uncontested open layups. This happened numerous times and allowed us to jump out to a double digit lead early in the game. By the end of the first quarter, we led it 31-5. The second quarter was more of the same as our defense managed to contain them well, forcing them to either commit a turnover or rushed to take bad shots. They only managed to score 3 points in the quarter and we had a sizeable lead at 58-8 by halftime.
In the second half however, we shifted our focus to shooting three pointers and outside shots to try to warm ourselves up for future games and also get used to the rims at the competition venue. As a result, we scored a total of 10 three pointers in the second half alone, while continuing to stand strong on our defense, limiting the opponents to just 4 points in the 3rd and 4th quarter combined. This resulted in the lead ballooning to a 99 point advantage, and us breaking the 100 point mark for the first time in the season as we won with a final score of 111-12. This is the first year that SJI had registered a team for Nationals and the differences between the two teams in terms of years of practice and competition experience showed.
We shot a decent 10/29 from the 3pt line (34.5%) and 39/55 from inside the arc (70.9%). Although we won this game, we will not be taking it for granted and grow complacent. This was a good warmup game for us to prepare us for the other schools upcoming on our schedule, and also to give us momentum heading into the second round.
