The game against National Junior College marked the end of the first round of the Nationals. The game was played at a fast pace as NJC applied a full court press defence on us right from the beginning. This made it difficult for us to carry out our fast-breaks, needless to say, to even get pass the half court line with ease. Nonetheless, we managed to put in our baskets within the paint with our players on court dishing out assists to our tall center Jie Ying (#8). The first quarter ended with a score of 15-6 in our favour.

The 2nd quarter was one of our better quarters of the game. We continued our zone defence on our opponents, hoping to be able to create more fast-break opportunities as well as preventing our opponent from cutting in and scoring an easy basket with their strong and fast drives. Again, our opponents never gave up on their tough defence and made it difficult for us to box them out in order to get the rebounds. Despite their aggressiveness and strong defence, we were successful in preventing them from scoring which resulted in the score of 11-2 at the end of the 2nd quarter.

The second half of the game became rather intense as the NJC players started to become more aggressive and rough during the game. Our players were constantly being fouled, and unfortunately, the referees did not pick up on the fouls on a couple of occasions. The NJC players tried to shore up their defence under the basket as 2-3 of them would rush towards our centers, Charmaine (#13) and Jie Ying (#8) whenever they got the ball, making it hard for them to put in the shots. In addition, they were also quick on their feet as they tried their best to prevent us from taking 3 point shots (1 attempt overall) and 2 point shots (11 attempts) outside of the 3 second zone.

Above all, the team managed to maintain the lead and withstand the aggressive defence and offence that NJC played on us. Our final game score ended 35-25.

Our next game will mark the start of our quarter-finals round and the girls will be up against Dunman High School at Singapore Basketball Center at 1pm on Friday, May 4th.
